Self Portraits and Portraits

Tip #1: Set the Timer High and Use Burst

Obviously, you don't want to have to haul all out and run into the frame just as your camera takes the image. Give yourself plenty of time to get in position and figure out what you're doing. Most cameras let you vary the length of the timer, check your manual for how to set yours.
In conjunction with the timer, you can usually set your camera to take multiple photos in succession. Even if all you need is one photo, it's not a bad idea to have your camera snap five or ten so you can vary your pose/expression. This will give you much more variety when it comes time to choose the image. Just make sure you have your settings perfect before turning burst on, otherwise you'll have a card full of unusable shots.

Tip #2

A mirror or some other reflective surface offers an even easier way to take a self-portrait. In most cases, the camera will be included in the scene (but this can help make a statement about your enthusiasm for photography). You can use your camera as a prop, and hold it away from your face. When you photograph into a mirror, be sure your reflection is in focus. An infrared autofocusing system will usually focus on glass if it's aimed into a mirror, and will focus at infinity if aimed at an angle. You might try focusing at an object that's the same distance as the distance from the camera to the reflection, lock in the focus, recompose the image to include yourself, and take the picture.

environmental portrait
I chose this picture for environmental photo because the lighting is dim so that the cranberries stand out as well as the landscape.

I chose this picture because just by the background you can tell they can possibly be a fun couple and with the ocean and the sunset you can also tell the are romantic.

Casual portrait
i chose this image because this little girl i adorable and its something different from most casual portraits because this images is simple and it focuses on the little girl and the apple and her happiness

this images uses her portrait like a mirror plus the baby is cute
